Nicest thing to hear

One of may former students talked to me in a parking lot, as I was going to shop at a local store. She announced that she had passed a course! This was not just ANY course! This was a course that a teacher said she was not "college material" enough to take . I begged her not to quit when the teacher said that. After a year, she came back and overcame that negative thinking.

I am proud of her! The climb up the academic hill becomes one step shorter. She ovecame narrow-minded negative thinking to accomplish the task of passing the course!

Work, yet another form to review my job to fill out!

They are doing a job review. Probably the 4 or 5th one in 7 years. This is a tailchasing exercise that someone uses the results to stuff a folder and gather dust.

The wierd thing about this one is the screwball questions like this one: "List three examples of the kinds of decisions you must make as part of your regular work responsibilities. For each decision listed, cite the consequence or impact if an error is made. When responding consider the amount of judgment and thought required and the availability of policies, procedures, and standards to guide you in solving problems. Also consider the degree to which creative thinking is required to organize or develop new or improved methods, ideas, procedures or techniques." Who thinks about screwing up or even what happens if you screw up!!!!! He mistakes happen. That is why we have whiteout, erasures, and MicrosoftWord Editor.

Well the TASK is OVERRRRRRRRRR! Another tree cut down to fill a file drawer with paper!

A Teacher likes to check on the students!

Exams are a hectic time, even for teachers

Funny, as a student I thought teachers had it easy during exams. Little did I know that my one test as a student is multiplied by the number in the class of papers to be read by the teacher.

After grading the 10th paper with 40 left to grade, the writing and answers seem to get blury. Now I think, Student sure have it easy......

The clock ticks down to 4:30!

Sometimes I think there are only one time in a day. The time I am referring to is 4:30! From 8:00am, I live to make it to 4:30! Anybody care to suggest another hour in the day to look forward to?

Finals as a college instructor

One of the more chaotic events of teaching is finals test and grading the tests. In a class such as Learning Strategies and Orientation to College, students wait to the last minute to turn in semester long assignments (Activity Reports and Journals). Every semester I grumble that there must be a better way to grade tests and record grades.

In a related comment, this year's group of students in my classes are some of the best ones I have had in my 20 years of teaching entry preparation classes. It has been an enjoyment to work with them. I will miss them!
